From the Paint and Coatings Industry News article “Fall Violations Lead OSHA’s Top 10”: Falls remain the leading cause of death in construction, accounting for more than one-third of those fatalities, according to CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training. This summer, the center released an 11-minute informational video (Don’t Fall for It!) that featured first-person accounts by workers who have suffered falls and emotional testimony from the widow of a fatal fall victim. The testimony includes that of a contractor who suffered life-altering injuries that required six hours of spinal surgery after falling just six feet and a sheet metal worker’s tale of how he used to bungee jump and ride motorcycles, but can no longer tie his shoes. A new article from EIN News highlights the cooperative nature of the Campaign to Prevent Falls in Construction: OSHA, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) are teaming up to educate workers and employers on how to prevent construction falls. Each organization will provide information on how to prevent falls, including training on roofs, scaffolds and ladders. One of the more comprehensive prevention programs is OSHA’s “Plan-Provide-Train” campaign. As its name implies, the campaign encourages employers to plan for hazards, provide appropriate safety equipment and effectively train employees in fall prevention and safety. Lineman demonstrating use of fall protection at the Lineman’s Rodeo ACTA Safety and Utility Safety Technologies (UST) teamed up during the International Lineman’s Rodeo and Expo in Bonner Springs, Kansas,to promote the Campaign to Prevent Falls in Construction. Members of ACTA Safety were provided a place at the UST vendor booth, and both ACTA Safety and UST handed out campaign materials to attendees and linemen. The message of the campaign was well-received at the Rodeo, including the idea that planning to work safely can be more productive, especially when workers are provided the tools and training to do so. Christine M. Branche, Ph.D., FACE, principal associate director at NIOSH and director of its Office of Construction Safety and Health will be in Arizona on Friday, November 2, 2012 at the Arizona Country Club to discuss the campaign to stop falls in construction, hosted by the Arizona Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (AZ ASSE). As an organization the Arizona Chapter of the ASSE has long promoted the importance of worker safety and fall protection. As a supporter of the campaign to stop construction falls the AZ ASSE has already provided links on their web site and sent letters to the National ASSE and OSHA in support of improving worker safety. Dr. Branche will be in attendance at the November technical meeting and luncheon to discuss the difference between NIOSH and OSHA and most importantly to discuss the campaign to stop falls in construction and how others can join the effort. Using materials from the Campaign to Prevent Falls in Construction, ACTA Safety emphasized the message of the campaign: Plan, Provide, Train. That is, employers and workers must create a safe plan for work, provide workers with the tools to work safely, and train those employees to do the job safely.
